Chapel of Panagia Astathkion

At a distance of 2 kilometres, east of the village, on a hill, the chapel dedicated to Panayia Astathkion is built.

According to one scenario, the chapel got its name from the fertile land that was rich in ears of wheat (astathkia). Another version states that the area was divided among people in various parts (stadia) and was named Panagia Stadion but through paraphrasing, it ended up being called “stathkion” and “astathkion”.

The chapel is of Gothic style and was built in the 16th century. Externally it is built out of stone. Internally, the chapel’s walls are decorated with frescoes, which have began however to deteriorate. The iconostasis is made out of wood and has four new icons. The Psalter is wooden and very old. There is no belfry. The chapel celebrates once a year on Thursday known in Greek as “Diakainisimou”.
